There the novella ends, in total failure. Plantagenet ha postured, done his best to be "significant", read all the necessary symbols into whatever came before his eyes, sympathized with his fellow patients, argued passionately with his antagonist, tried his hardest to be a madman suffering in Purgatory - but he is still another drunk, another derelict in a city full of derelicts.
